The Rising Tide: Summerville

Documentary Screening and Panel

Join us for the screening of The Tides of Change, a powerful documentary that lifts the voices of teachers, administrators, and families leading a grassroots movement to transform literacy across Charleston.

The film captures the heart of this work through the stories of two families whose lives are forever changed by access to the Orton-Gillingham approach—an approach unlocking reading for children who have long been left behind. Their journeys are woven together with the perspectives of educators and community leaders who are rising up to ensure every child has the fundamental right to read.

Following the screening, a panel of educators and parents will talk about the power of the Orton-Gillingham approach and opportunities to build more capacity in Summerville.

More than a film, The Tide of Change is a call to action. It is a portrait of what’s possible when a community comes together, determined to close the literacy gap and build a brighter future for all children in the Lowcountry.

Watch our full 20 minute documentary now!

On January 20th, 2026, Charleston Music Hall was packed wall to wall with educators, parents, students, and community leaders who showed up because literacy matters—and because they believe change is possible. The energy was undeniable. The stories were powerful. And the message was clear: when we equip teachers with the right tools and align instruction with how children actually learn to read, lives change. This was more than a screening—it was a movement in motion. If you couldn’t be in the room, we’re bringing the room to you. Download and watch The Tide of Change: Literacy in the Lowcountry and experience the hope, urgency, and momentum that filled the hall.

Thank You To Our Host Committee

Behind every packed room and every powerful moment is a community willing to lead. The Rising Tide Host Committee represents educators, parents, business leaders, and advocates who used their voices, networks, and influence to help fill the Charleston Music Hall and elevate this conversation. Their leadership made it possible to gather the right people in the room—and to turn awareness into momentum. We are deeply grateful for each of these champions who stepped forward to ensure this story was seen, heard, and shared.
